Welcome to "Upper Hutt's Premier Experience" by stepping back in time or maybe back to the future
where Great Fine food, coffee, wine and people meet history with warmth. Mayfair Cafe, as it
was once called "The Mayfair Theatre" is in a 100 yr old restored building. And everywhere you look
in this delightful café you will find cinematic history on display. Mayfair has a “nostalgic
ambience in an extended lounge atmosphere”. It is also an establishment that exudes style, history
and a café culture with a difference. And now we have added an intimate wine bar we called
The BoileRoom. This is located at the back room of the cafe with and also have its own entrance at
Geange Street. The century old boiler saved during restoration, once used to heat the
historic cinema, has taken up new residence, amongst the red bricks, framed warmly by the dense
Oregon bar of the new BoileRoom. The crisp white ornate ceiling presides watchfully over the soft
Dijon and full bodied Merlot colours of The BoileRoom walls. Mayfair Cafe is open seven days
with dinners served Thursdays, Friday and Saturday nights. Bookings are highly recommended.
Whilst The BoileRoom is open 5 days Wed-Sat from 2 pm till late and Sundays from 10am till
4:30. It boasts a comprehensive wine list and a fine selection of boutique beers. While at
the cafe, on chilly winter days you really must sample the house speciality - a home-made mulled
wine or try any time of the day, the Coffee Supreme De Luxe - your choice of coffee served with
Sante bar. Mayfair Cafe is also a great and ideal venue for a business lunch and it can also
be hired for private functions. For a more intimate smaller group, The BoileRoom wine bar can also
be hired for up to 25 people. With the Cafe’s expansive space, it hosted a few weddings where
it can comfortably sit up to 70 with an a-la-carte style menu, it also hosted a few Big 21 to Big
Five-O birthdays, with buffet style menu and even children's parties. It is expansive yet cosy as
it has that 100 year old character and the great log fire! From porridge to the famous giant
scones, to the local favourite Hash Stacks, the Mayfair Classic Big Breakfast to Caesar salad,
choices of Gluten Free to Vegetarian; a dinner menu to die for - home smoked pork chops to brilliant
cooked steaks and melt in your mouth slowly baked crumbed aubegine; Head Chef-owner Rob Cowan
delights the palette with a selection of his fine European, New Zealand and Asian cuisine influenced
by his travels from around NZ, the UK, Sydney, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and the
Philippines. In addition to his main menus which changes with the season to assure the use of
the local fresh season produce, daytime cabinet choices which changes daily, daily blackboard
specials, an all day snack and junior menus are also available.
"After my travels and NZ
experience from great mentors and a Michelin star Chef, it is so great to come back to my roots
sharing the tastes, smells , colours and flavours I've experienced" says Rob who is actually a local
boy, born and bred in Upper Hutt. Rob's experience stems from Brookfield’s estate, to the Boulcott Street Bistro, Te
Papa's Icon, Felix Cafe and his culinary learnings stints overseas. Mayfair Cafe also supports
local talents. Every second Tuesday of each month, the café hosts an evening of unplugged, mainly
acoustic music featuring both local and countrywide artists. In addition, the cafe occasionally
becomes a venue for those who prefer their after-dinner music to have a little more punch such that
they can let their hair down…as well as their dinner! Customers come from far and wide to
drink and dine here – testament to the reputation the Longstaff's family have achieved in providing
a friendly local meeting place, where Rob and Bernice are fully committed to continue. We look
forward to enjoying your company here soon @ the "Mayfair Cafe - Upper Hutt's Premier Experience!
And sharing a fine glass of wine or a cold glass of boutique beer at our wine bar “The
BoileRoom”.
